The frescoes in the hallway of the Ranuihof depict fourteen hunting, kitchen and landscape scenes. Above the entrance door in a panel between 2 flower vases is a Turk’s head, and on the door the inscription: „betrachtest du diesen Saal, was zu sehen ist überall“ (look carefully at this hall, there is something to see everywhere).

The paintings give a lively impression of the landscape around Ranui through the seasons, as well as life in the household and hunting both at home and in faraway lands. The painter had a good eye for landscapes, kitchen
scenes, animals and huntsmen. In the Villnöss Valley there were still bears, stags, wild boars, birds and other
creatures in those days, and both animals and hunting could be seen here. Where the painter got his notion of
exotic animals such as leopards and lions from, is unknown.

Scene 1

Herdsmen Scenes

In scene 1 of the murals, a woman is holding out a posy of flowers to a man, alongside them are hunters with weapons in their hands and farmers, a dairy maid with a milk bowl and two horned goats.
Ornamental paintings frame door No. 2. Two chubby faces peer out from the decorations.

Scene 2

Bear Hunt

There is a lively depiction of a bear hunt in scene 2. It shows a female bear with two cubs, dogs baiting them and huntsmen approaching on horseback with bows and arrows; in the background more huntsmen with dogs can be seen.

Scene 3

Lion Hunt

Scene 3 shows a lion hunt. A Moor on horseback in oriental clothing is spearing an attacking lion, other huntsmen are approaching with arrows in their quivers and a lion with an arrow in its body is in the throes of death.

Scene 4

Fireside Scene

Scene 4 shows a kitchen, with a man standing in front of the open cooking fire. In the frame around the double-arched window at the eastern end of the hall, heads are depicted on the right and left-hand sides. The view is of the wooded mountains with the crags of the Dolomites soaring above them.

Scene 5

Man-At-Arms

In scene 5 there is a man-at-arms in smart livery and armed with a halberd.

Scene 6

Leopard Hunt

Scene 6 depicts an extremely vivid leopard hunt. A huntsman in oriental costume is being attacked by a leopard. A rider is hurrying to help him with his sword drawn, young leopards are running around and a huntsman is stabbing another leopard in the throat.

Scene 7

Catching Birds

In scene 7, birds are being caught; a man and woman sit underneath a tree with birds in its branches.

Scene 8

Stag Hunt

In scene 8 there is a very colourfully depicted stag hunt. Riders with dogs are stalking and the dogs are hustling a powerful stag, one huntsman is blowing into his horn.

Scene 9

Wild Boar Hunt

Scene 9, which is opposite the stag hunt in a side corridor, depicts a wild boar hunt: Huntsmen are on the prowl with boar spears, a rider blows into a bugle and their dogs attack a fleeing boar.

Scena10

Kitchen scene

In the main hallway again, scene 10 displays a kitchen motif:
A hare hangs over a cooking pot, kitchen implements are shown with a number of receptacles, and there is also a sausage hanging up. A man stands behind a woman with a cooking spoon in her hand, and on the floor is a sheep, an upturned pot, dogs, cats and rats.

Life in the winter landscape of Ranui

A farmer drives his sled, two huntsmen go about their business, children pull their sled, and a dog sits watching. Two carollers and children are walking along in front of the Ranuihof, and there is a boy with a dog. The inscription: “Ich bleib mein Herrn allzeit getreu sterb auch ein Christ in Jägerei” (I will always remain true to my Lord and die a Christian huntsman) can be read.

Scene 12

Summer scene

Scene 12 is a very colourful depiction of a summer scene in Ranui showing the farm and the Geisler peaks. Here the Ranuihof still has its tower, which was later taken down; the scene looks across towards Kantioler, and shows the Ranuihof’s barn, stabling and mill, as well as sheep and a huntsman with dogs.

Scene 13

Summer scene

The next scene, scene 13 on the northernmost side of the hall, contains a very realistic view of the Ranuihof and its surroundings. Birds are flying in the sky between the farm with its characteristic tower and the Kantiolerhof which lies on the slopes of St. Magdalena hill; a huntsman is resting, in front of the house is a farmer with his dog, there is a full pot on the floor and more huntsmen are approaching.

Scena 14

Scene 14

Scene 14, which again is a large landscape depiction, brings the comprehensive cycle of frescoes in the Ranuihof’s hallway to an end: In the foreground is a huntsman with a slain hare in his hand and two dogs.
